Sizing Your Canoe Paddle
How to Size Your Canoe Paddle
The most important measurement when choosing a paddle is the shaft length — the distance from the grip to the throat of the paddle.
A properly sized paddle allows:
- Comfortable stroke mechanics
- Better control
- Improved efficiency
- Reduced fatigue
General Sizing Formula
Your shaft length should approximately equal the distance from:
Your shoulder → to the canoe waterline
This positioning keeps your upper hand below eye level while allowing your lower hand to remain comfortably near the throat of the paddle.
Quick Sizing Method
- Sit upright on a flat chair or the floor
- Measure from the seat surface to your chin
- Add approximately 6 inches
This estimated number provides a good starting point for shaft length selection.
Example:
- Chin-to-seat measurement: 26”
- Add 6”
- Recommended shaft length: approximately 32”
Depending on paddle style, this may correspond to:
- 50” Touring Bent Shaft
- 54” Voyageur
- 56” Chieftain
A variation of 1–2 inches is typically acceptable depending on paddling style, seat height, and personal comfort preference.
