Care of Your Wooden Paddle
Proper care and maintenance will extend the life and performance of your wooden paddle.
Varnished Paddles
Although the polyurethane varnish on your paddle is highly durable, it is not resistant to rock abrasions. Nicks and scratches should be lightly sanded and recoated annually with a quality marine urethane varnish.
Oiled Paddles
Oiled paddles require more frequent maintenance.
- Paddles used daily should be re-oiled every 2–4 weeks
- Paddles used occasionally (1–2 times per week or less) should be re-oiled every 1–2 months
To refinish:
- Lightly sand the paddle using very fine sandpaper or steel wool
- Apply a light coat of boiled linseed oil
Storage Recommendations
Solid wood paddles should not be left standing upright or leaning for extended periods, as warping may occur. For best results, store paddles:
- Hanging from the handle, or
- Lying flat
Safety Warning
Warning: Boiled linseed oil and oil-soaked rags may be subject to spontaneous combustion.
After use, oil-soaked rags should be:
- Spread flat on a non-combustible surface, and
- Allowed to dry completely before disposal
